Ranked in the top 16 'impact freshman' by ESPN, the start of Zeigler's career and his arrival at CMU has been much anticipated. With a brand new arena and a team expected to be one of the best in the Mid-American Conference, Zeigler's freshman season will be followed closely by thousands of fans, hoping to see them grab a title.

Big Long Doughnuts - Class Illustration

Our class illustration is based on the idea "You are what you eat." In order to create these images we first photographed Jeremy Olson using a soft box to camera right as the main light. We also used a fill light bouncing off the wall on camera left and a rim light coming from camera left. We carefully photographed the doughnut next using the exact same lighting setup. To create our final image we cut the doughnut out using the magnetic lasso and then transposed the image onto the image of Olson. For the first image, we took our photoshop skills a little further by using the liquefy filter to remove some of Olson's shirt. We then used a clone stamp tool to make the arm look natural. Presto.

Lighting setup: Strobe underneath the table, soft box behind the subject, with a reflector attached to a ladder in front, shot using a telephoto lens off the top of the ladder. Situation two was lit with soft box only, on a black surface.

Situation 1 - Reach for the stars

Stars fill the room and hallway of an abandoned house at 4934 S. Crawford Road. The room, which appeared to be a child's bedroom, had stars painted on the floor and ceiling, with a banner that read "reach for the stars".

When searching through an abandoned house at 4934 S. Crawford road, I came across a child's room on the second floor. The ceiling and floor were covered with painted stars, and there was a banner that read "reach for the stars". I made a light stencil out of a cardboard box by cutting a star shape out of the front, and cutting a hole in the bottom for the strobe. I used the strobe at 1/64 power to create the stars.

Situation 2 - Orb of light

A mysterious figure (Jeff Smith) stands within an orb of light in an abandoned house at 4934 S. Crawford Road. The room was ransacked and littered with garbage.

To shoot this, I put the camera on a tripod outside of the house, shooting through a broken window. I placed one strobe outside the other side of the house at full power, zoomed to 105mm to create the shadow of the windows on the left wall. I placed another strobe to the right, outside of the frame at 1/8 power to give the room a little bit of light. I spun a flashlight on a string and walked in a circle to create the orb of light, and then aimed the flashlight at my face to burn myself into the middle of the orb.

Fashion Practice

During class on Monday Oct. 4, we got to practice fashion photography. Dan Stewart visited to show how he incorporates lights into his wedding shoots, and offered his skills when we went out to shoot on location. In the top image, Dan had told me to have the main strobe aimed at him vertically rather than horizontally, which is something I have never tried before. The light filled his whole body very nicely, I'm happy with the way the image turned out!

Mid Michigan Community College freshman Scot Jenkins will be an active serviceman serving the 119th Bravo Battalion, a field artillery unit, in Kuwait starting Monday September 13. "I wanted to the money so I could go to school," he said. "I was supposed to go to Iraq, but since (President Barack) Obama ended Operation Iraqi Freedom, I will be in Kuwait." Jenkins plans to attend Central Michigan University to study criminal justice once his one year tour is completed.
